A MARINE technology firm has secured a major contract to continue its expansion into Asia.

Tekmar Energy, based in Newton Aycliffe, recently won the deal with client Seaway 7, in Taiwan.

The company will be supplying 150 of their patented Tekmar Cable Protection Systems (CPS) to the Yunlin Offshore Wind Farm.

The systems protect the subsea power cables as they transition from the offshore structures into burial.

Tekmar Energy employs about 115 people and is a market leader in subsea cable, umbilical and flexible pipe protection systems.

The firm hopes the new project will be fully operational by the end of 2021, using 80 x 8MW Siemens Gamesa turbines.

Russell Edmondson, managing director of Tekmar Energy said: “The contract award on the Yunlin project continues our relationship with Seaway 7 following successful completion on the Beatrice Offshore Wind Farm in Scotland and our recent award on the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind Farm.”

Mr Edmondson said the contract is one of the firm's largest non-European projects to date.

Jonathan Linton, package manager at Seaway 7 said: “The success of the offshore industry relies on performance, innovation and collaboration to deliver successful projects.

"We are especially proud of the Yunlin project and looking forward to working with Tekmar Energy who are delivering a key part of this excellent project.”

The successful deal follows firms announcement that it has signed a sale and purchase agreement for the ownership of Pipeshield International ltd – a provider of specialised subsea pipeline protection systems to oil and gas majors and offshore contractors.

James Ritchie, chief executive officer of Tekmar, said: “Pipeshield is a perfect fit for Tekmar. Its products are complementary, allowing us to upsell and expand our offering to clients, realising our Group vision. The business has many similarities with Tekmar from both end customers to markets but also most importantly it fits culturally. The business focuses on technology, as its key differentiator, and Pipeshield has outstanding credentials, which demonstrate its commitment to safety, quality and, above all, its people; these are key values which we embrace across all Group companies. I am truly excited by the prospect of adding the Pipeshield offering to Tekmar’s portfolio and I welcome Steve and his team to the family.”
