A TV entrepreneur has been named the first North-East recipient of a prestigious business award.

Dragon's Den star Sara Davies, founder and creative director of Crafter’s Companion, in Newton Aycliffe, was given the title of great British entrepreneur of the year for the North-East at the NatWest Great British Entrepreneur Awards.

The entrepreneur launched craft retailer, Crafter’s Companion, 14 years ago which has gone from strength to strength.

In that time, Mrs Davies has grown the business to a team of 200 and the company sells its products to more than 40 countries around the world.

Now in its seventh year, the NatWest Great British Entrepreneur Awards celebrate the hard work and inspiring stories of entrepreneurs, rather than the business’ balance sheet.

Mrs Davies said: “To be named as NatWest’s first North-East great British entrepreneur is amazing. It is so important to celebrate the wealth of entrepreneurial talent that we have in the region and there were so many worthy winners in the room. I am truly grateful to have received the award and look forward to representing the North-East at the national finals in London.”

Francesca James, founder of the NatWest Great British Entrepreneur Awards, said: “From parents running small businesses to family members exploring crafts, Sara has taken inspiration from her childhood to build something special. She’s truly deserving of the title of the first North-East entrepreneur of the year."
