THE North-East is replete with wonderful, historic buildings and impressive monuments, but far too many of them are considered to be ‘hidden’ gems. It’s time to take a closer look at the fabulous heritage that is in the region and appreciate what is right on the doorstep.

Included in this company is the historic Lumley Castle, in Chester-le-Street, near Durham, which has been long-established as one of the premiere places to stay, and eat, in the North-East.

The recent appointment of a new Executive General Manager, Gordon Cartwright, has set in motion a programme of improvements that will enhance the experience for visitors choosing to stay in the 630-year-old castle.

Gordon brings with him 30-years’ experience in the industry, having begun his career with Roux Restaurants as an apprentice chef.

He achieved a Michelin Star at Sharrow Bay, a Catey Nomination at the Snooty Fox, and a Silver Medal at the European Championships, before ‘hanging up his whites' in 1997.

He says of his appointment with Lumley Castle: “As the General Manager of the hotel, there is definitely a privileged sense of ‘on-the-shoulders-of giants-go-I’. The challenge is to overlay a modern sophisticated hotel and restaurant experience on an incredibly historic framework. We do this sympathetically, but also with an eye on what satisfies the expectations of the 21st century traveller.”

Part of Gordon’s mission is to introduce more relaxed dining, that will be complemented by the refurbishment of The Knight’s Brasserie, and the Library Bar and Lounge, planned for the beginning of next year.

However, diners can already enjoy the delicious new Autumn & Winter Menu that has been introduced with the appointment of Great British Menu chef, Craig Sherrington, who, along with his team, are directing a new focus on the food, underscored by fresh, seasonal produce. His cooking style is rooted in the classics, but with quirky modern twists.

Craig’s pedigree is in top-class kitchens, which have included Virginia House in Ulverston, Lords of the Manor at Upper Slaughter, and acclaimed Le Champignon Sauvage in Cheltenham.

He is a very hands-on chef – often bringing dishes out to dining room himself, saucing a main course, or explaining where the produce has come from, and his over-riding aim is to ensure his customers are happy when they leave.

Historic Lumley Castle has always been a unique wedding venue, with a touch of glamour, and plans are well underway to launch new wedding experiences in 2020.

Presenting a more modern twist, the castle is also one of the UK’s leading Escape Rooms, focussing around the ghost of Lily of Lumley, with no expense being spared to create a truly immersive and thrilling Escape experience.
