IF you’re thinking about selling your house and getting settled in to a new property for Christmas, there is still time.
Now that the kids are back at school, your summer holiday is just a fond memory, it’s a good time to take stock, have a clear out, and prepare for what is one of life’s major changes.
Preparing to move house is a great opportunity to de-clutter, and it’s far easier to get it done quickly and less stressfully once the school holidays are over, you have time to think and plan, and before the next big family event – Christmas.
You can also be more ruthless if you don’t have someone following you round objecting to you throwing out those long-forgotten items re-discovered in the dark recesses of the wardrobe.
If you do have trouble getting rid of ‘momentos’, but you really don’t need to cart it to your new property, a good tip is to take a photo of it. You will always have the image to look at - and remember its importance - but it’ll be in ‘the cloud’ rather than taking up unnecessary space in your house.
Getting sorted in the late summer and early autumn means that you will have most of what you need to do is out of the way before Christmas preparations start. Ideally, you don’t want to be showing potential buyers round while you need to be doing the Christmas shopping.
Of course, there is no real ‘optimum’ time to sell - it depends on what is right for you and your circumstances. But it is always a good idea to consult the experts for advice and help with buying or selling your property, as they know the market best, and will take your particular requirements into consideration.
