A NATIONAL pub chain has now submitted a planning application to open a pub in Bishop Auckland.

Amber Taverns seeks permission from Durham County Council to redevelop the former Poundworld store on Newgate Street.

The proposal includes a new external terrace, manager accommodation and changes to the exterior of the building.

A heritage statement reads: “Our client, having recently taken on this site, is looking to convert the site from the existing retail unit into a thriving local bar for the local community and visitors from further afield to enjoy.

“The proposals to create the terrace provides the opportunity to extend the seating area to create an external ‘hideaway’ area which is often sought after and difficult to come by within such built up central area of town.”

The public can comment on the plans until Thursday, February 28 with a final decision expected by Wednesday, April 3.
