A VILLAGE supermarket is to close, putting the jobs of 11 members of staff at risk.

Workers at The Co-op on Front Street in Langley Park have been told the last day of trading will be on March 16.

Customer Debra Maughan said many customers were pensioners.

She said: “Many just live over the road and now they will have to travel further to get their shopping.”

A spokesman for the retail chain said no other stores in the region, including the branch on Quebec Street in Langley Park, are affected by the closure.

He said: “The Co-op is moving forward with real purpose and momentum, and while this usually involves the opening of new stores, we also have to make difficult decisions. After careful consideration, our store in Langley Park, will close. The last day of trading is expected to be March 16.

“This is in no way a reflection of the hard work of colleagues, who have been informed, and every effort will be made to find new roles for those affected.

“We would like to thank the community for its support over the years.”
