A TASTE of County Durham will be on offer to politicians and guests in the House of Commons from next week.

The Strangers’ Bar, in the Palace of Westminster, will from Tuesday be serving pints of Local Hero - a 3.9 per cent light golden beer brewed by the Yard of Ale Brewery, in Ferryhill Station.

Husband and wife, Alan and Susan Hogg, run the micro-brewery alongside their roles as landlord and lady of its base, The Surtees Arms, on Chilton Lane.

The six barrels of the specially brewed booze will be the first from the Sedgefield constituency to feature in the bar - thanks to the application by MP Phil Wilson.

Mr Hogg said: “It’s great exposure for us. We’ve only been brewing for ten years and have been been supplying beers around the region.

“It’s a great honour and means the world to us to be recognised as this opportunity doesn’t come around every day.”

The 46-year-old, who has been at the pub for 12 years, thanked Mr Wilson for the gesture.

Mr Wilson said: “This is a way of promoting a small local business.

“They are nice people and I want people who use The Strangers’ Bar to have a taste of the constituency and this is the way to do it.”
