BURGESS Graham Nigel On September 15, suddenly at home aged 86 years, of Brentwood, Leyburn, formerly of West Scrafton, Coverdale. Former Headmaster of Hurworth House School, Darlington and Senior Master at Grosvenor House School, Harrogate. Beloved husband of Ruth, dearly loved father of Trevor and Mark and a much loved father-in-law and grandad. Due to the current circumstances the funeral service will be private and family only. This is very late. But as a 51 year old man now, I have always looked back upon my wonderful time at Hurworth House and, in particular, Mr Burgess, as my former headmaster and French master, who has inspired me so much, more than any other person, to become an understanding, calm and caring teacher in my own vocation. Mr Burgess was the very epitome of fairness, equality and most importantly passion. I still follow the practice of Mr Burgess by giving my own students a 5 minute 'Daily Dictation', which really is the best way to start a lesson to get students motivated while adopting a firm, positive and immediate classroom focus as well as a clear understanding of British manners. Mr Burgess was a great headmaster, French teacher and leader for the first eleven of soccer, rugger and cricket on the sports field. Only of late have I wondered how he managed it all, with a limited budget of about 100 children's fees from Lower 4 to Upper six / Scholarship (a paltry sum to run a school so well), yet he still created a school of excellence with an exemplary bunch of teachers. A truly great educationalist and a person that will never be forgotten by us boys that were so lucky to be educated and led by him. RIP Sir.

It is with much sadness to hear that Graham has passed away. I have wonderful memories of Hurworth House School and the many years Jon-Paul spent there.
My thoughts are with you and all the family at this sad time.
