The site of a former home improvement store is up for sale months after it closed.

The building which housed Chiltern Mills on Redcar high street will be auctioned off on May 23 after it closed in October last year.

The retail property has a guide price of £230,000.

This comes after the business said it was forced to close due to the pandemic and being unable to compete with larger businesses.

Agents have said the property offers the opportunity to “convert into a mixed-use building, let as is or reconfigure into smaller units all subject to obtaining the necessary consents.”

They said: “The high street is the principal shopping thoroughfare in the town running west from the Esplanade.

“The property commands a prominent position on the north side of High Street.

“Nearby occupiers include TSB, Heron Frozen Foods, Santander, B&M, KFC and Specsavers.”

At the time of Chiltern Mills’ closure, a spokesperson for the business said: “It is with much regret that the Directors of Treymaine Limited t/as Chiltern Mills (the Company) have to announce that the company has ceased to trade with immediate effect.

"Due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the national lockdowns, which covered the period March 2020 until June 2022, the Company was unable to open its stores as it was classfied as a 'non-essential' business and had to follow all the restrictions imposed by the Government.

"During this period, some of the Company's larger competitors could still trade, for example, B&M, Home Bargains and The Range remained open due to their overall businesses being classed as 'essential'.

"After many years of trading across the north of England, these lockdowns and restrictions hindered the Company's progress and resulted in the Company no longer being financially viable."
