The fire service have confirmed that the huge fire in Sunderland last night destroyed multiple buildings.

Reports began at midnight that a property on Villiers Street had caught fire and there were up to 30 firefighters battling the blaze at its peak.

The fire service have confirmed that crews finally left the scene at just after 2pm today.

Pictures from Villiers Street show the remains of multiple buildings completely destroyed by the flames.

Further investigations will be taking place into what started the blaze.

Hendon Road has now been reopened but streets immediately around the building will remain closed for a while longer.

A Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We can confirm that the fire at a commercial property on Villiers Street in Sunderland has been extinguished.

"At the height of the fire up to 30 firefighters had been tackling the blaze. Hendon Road has now been reopened to vehicles, however the streets in the immediate vicinity of the building will remain closed for a prolonged period of time.
