John Cusack has joked his new comedy Hot Tub Time Machine is The Godfather of its genre.

The actor wasn't taking things too seriously when he came out to meet press at a special party for the film in Hollywood, joined by his co-stars Chevy Chase, Rob Corddry and Clark Duke.

"It's The Godfather of recreational water-based time travel movies," John teased.

"It may be the most important hot tub movie ever made in the pantheon of great hot tub time travel movies."

He added: "It's the Citizen Kane of hot tub movies!"

The comedy follows a group of men who, after a crazy night of drinking in a ski resort hot tub, wake up in the year 1986.

John admitted he'd like to do more funny films in the future, saying: "I think so, if people let me keep making movies, I will."

The actor came on board to produce the movie as well as star in it.

He revealed: "The script was two thirds written when they said come on in to produce it. They said, 'You have to do it in seven weeks because you have to shoot the skiing stuff before all the snow is melted.'

"It was sort of like one of those things, you get offered great actors, a really stupid silly idea and I thought, 'Alright, let's roll the dice and do it' - it just seemed like one of those weird things that was meant to be."
