Tait loss is a blow for Mowden

DARLINGTON Mowden Parkfs hopes that Alex Tait might be available to help them achieve promotion to National Two have been dashed by his injury.

Before being required for Newcastle Falcons first team duty during the Six Nations Championship, Tait played briefly for Mowden and he is still registered with them.

But he tore a hamstring seven minutes after going on as a replacement for Jamie Noon during the Falconsf 16-15 defeat at Leeds.

After losing two wingers through injury for the rest of the season, Mowden were planning to speak to acting Newcastle boss Steve Bates this week.

They will now shuffle their resources for this weekfs trip to Macclesfield, with Lawrence Oliver doing his chances of a recall no harm during Saturdayfs Durham Cup defeat by Westoe.

Oliver finished well in scoring Mowdenfs only try in the 70th minute, and given that the home pack was going backwards most of the time Jon Dye did well at No 8 on his return after a three-year injury absence.

James Fitzpatrick scored a hat-trick for Westoe, who scored four tries in each half, the last one coming from Martin Lithgo, the scrum half they loaned from Mowden at the start of the season.

Durham City won their delayed Durham Intermediate Cup tie 34-7 at home to Horden and will visit Billingham in the semi-finals on a date to be decided.

Playing into a strong wind, Horden took a first-minute lead through a converted try by David Grand, but then City dominated as they tuned up in encouraging style for this weekfs North Two East promotion battle at home to West Hartlepool.

Skipper Grant Thompson, playing at centre, used his power to score a first half hattrick as City built a 29-7 lead before a blizzard checked their progress.

Kevin Showler had also scored, and with Horden coming more into the game the only second half try came from Chris Metcalfe. Arnie Stevenson added three conversions and a penalty.

The Durham selectors met at Darlington on Saturday and selected a squad of 36 to prepare for this seasonfs county championship.

Following last yearfs promotion Durham can look forward to a renewal of derby matches against Northumberland, who they play at Alnwick on May 10.

The opening match is against North Midlands at Stourbridge on May 3 and the final game is at Darlington against Cumbria on May 17.
