Newcastle strengthen their midfield ranks

NEWCASTLE Falcons strengthened their midfield ranks earlier today when they completed the signing of centre Spencer Davey from Doncaster Knights.

Davey, 25, will join the club in the summer on a one-year deal.

Falcons interim director of rugby Steve Bates said: "Spencer is a player we have been watching for some time, and we are delighted to have secured his signature."

Standing at 6ft 1in and weighing more than 15 stones, the former England Under-21 international made his Premiership breakthrough with Bath, where he made 28 first-team appearances at inside centre.

Davey continued his development at Glasgow before joining Doncaster at the start of this season, where he played a key role in helping the Yorkshire side reach the top four in National Division One.

He will provide cover for the likes of Mathew Tait, Toby Flood and Jamie Noon when they are away on international duty.

Bates added: "With our international backs away for so much of the season, the need for depth in midfield is absolutely vital for us going forward. Spencer will therefore be a quality addition to our playing group.

"He has good experience of rugby in all sorts of different environments in the Premiership, Celtic League and National One, so he is a player capable of adapting and we look forward to working with him over the next season."
