Falcons are set to blood Miller
NEWCASTLE Falcons have recalled
18-year-old fly half Rob
Miller from the England Under-
20s squad as they prepare for
Sunday's Guinness Premiership
visit of Bristol.
The former Keswick School
pupil had been due to feature for
England Under-20s in tonight's
Grand Slam decider with Ireland
at Gloucester, but will instead
come in to contention for his Premiership
debut.
Acting boss Steve Bates will
name his team today, but said:
"We made the decision to recall
Rob from the England Under-20s
squad, where he has made a significant
impact, and he has
trained with our first team all
this week.
"Having watched him in training
and playing for the Development
XV all season he is clearly
a very talented player."
With Jonny Wilkinson and
Toby Flood still on England duty,
third-choice fly half Steve Jones
was injured in last Saturday's defeat
at Bath and scrum half
James Grindal had to take over.
Having leapfrogged Gavin
Beasley in the pecking order both
at Newcastle and Tynedale, for
whom he has scored ten tries this
season, Miller is not the only upand-
coming fly half being nurtured
by the Falcons. Barnard
Castle School pair Rory Clegg
and Tom Catterick are both in
the England Under-18s squad.
The Falcons have announced
that only 100 seats remain on sale
for the European Challenge Cup
quarter-final against Castres on
Saturday, April 5 (8pm).
More than 5,000 tickets have already
been sold for the match,
with interest so high that the
club have decided to open the
North Terrace to cope with the
extra demand.
Commercial director, Mick
Hogan, said: "We have received a
fantastic response to the attractive
ticket prices we have put in
place for this game.
"Fans are reminded that they
should book in advance of
match-day to take advantage of
our reduced prices, with all areas
of the stadium priced £15 for
adults and £10 for concessions
and juniors."

Park during office hours.
■ With the Guinness A League
set to be scrapped next season,
Newcastle have sounded out
Tynedale, Blaydon and Darlington
Mowden Park about the possibility
of putting their Development
XV into one of those clubs.
As the Falcons would want at
least some of the games to be
played at Kingston Park, the plan
looks unlikely to progress because
of the clubs' fear of losing
their identity.
The RFU are keen for all Premiership
clubs to take a National
One or Two club under their
belts for player development purposes.
If one of the North-East trio
did take up the idea the plan
would be to get into National One
as quickly as possible, but it looks
unlikely to happen.
Mowden have a chance to move
further ahead of Three North
promotion play-off rivals Leicester
Lions tomorrow when struggling
West Park St Helens visit
Yiewsley Drive, while the Lions
have a tough game at Bradford
and Bingley.
England Students lock Peter
Browne is still not available for
Mowden, although it is hoped he
will play after Easter.
