THE experience of Matt Thompson and Andrew Baggett, back after injury, helped Blaydon to record their first win of the season in National One.

They beat Fylde 30-24, but with the visitors continuing to run everything their late try earned two bonus points.

With man of the match Baggett strengthening the midfield defence, Blaydon produced their best rugby of the season.

Lock Chris Wearmouth was prominent in a forward drive from the 22, which ended with the ball popping out for centre Tom Grimes to score.

He then broke from his own half and found support from Gavin Jones before scrum half Nathan Horsfall nipped over, making it 12-0.

Fylde came back with a converted try, but just before half-time Baggett kicked a penalty to the corner and Thompson finished a catch-and-drive.

Fylde had the gap down to three before Jones scored Blaydon's bonus point try and full back Brett Connon added two penalties.

Blaydon dominated the scrums and when the visitors lost both props they might have expected to benefit from uncontested scrums in the last 15 minutes. But there were only three minutes left when they scored.

Tynedale's hopes of climbing into the top half in National Two North vanished in the first half at Otley, where they trailed 29-0 before fighting back to lose 39-21.

Ash Smith, back at fly half, converted tries by centres Will Miller and Jack Harrison plus winger Henry Hadfield.

Billingham consolidated third place in Three North as they continued to rack up the points in a 43-5 win at Morley.

West Hartlepool lost their 100 per cent record in North One East, but a 13-13 draw at Penrith kept them comfortably on top.

A Gavin Painter penalty gave West the lead, but they trailed 13-3 at half-time before set piece strength allowed them to dominate.

Painter added a drop goal and the try came with ten minutes left, when 17-year-old replacement winger Adam Brown, on for his debut, made the running with Zac Southern for Will Hilditch to score.

Durham City scrambled out of the bottom three with a 23-22 home win against Pocklington, but Guisborough's third season at this level is proving their toughest as a 52-12 defeat at Dinnington left them 12 points adrift of safety.

Durham and Northumberland One leaders Northern won 100-5 at home to Ryton, while second-placed Barnard Castle claimed another notable scalp.

After beating Middlesbrough they went to Hartlepool Rovers and won 40-22 with fly half Greg Upton converting all five tries before skipper Adam Kicks scored his second at the death.

He also made the break for Ed Kirby to score the first, then full back Chris McTurk's chip and chase earned the first of his brace.

Dan Potts also touched down, while Rovers' tries were scored by Liam Wood, Joe Little and Callum Whitehead.

Following last week's improved form against Rovers, Stockton came away from Horden's new Eden Park ground with a well-earned 28-20 win.

They took an early lead when full back Dan Phinn raced over, then moved the ball wide when in possession and tackled fiercely.

Winger Steven Bartliff racked up 18 points with two tries, two conversions and a penalty. Fly half Jonny Horner scored the other try.

Middlesbrough won 36-19 at home to Gateshead after coming back from an early deficit to lead 31-7 at half-time.
