DARLINGTON Mowden Park will again be without leading try scorer Simon Uzokwe for tomorrow's trip to Coventry as he will be playing for England Students in Dublin.

He went on from the bench in the match against France last Saturday evening and scored a late try as England were beaten 30-27.

Uzokwe, a powerfully-built Sunderland University student, initially joined Mowden as a prop.

He has also played at hooker, but his pace has seen him convert to the back row and Newcastle Falcons are keen to take a look at him as a potential winger.

While he is expected to feature in the Falcons' Development XV next season, Mowden are hopeful that he will also be available for most of their games.

Their attempts to hang on to their best players have already seen them announce new contracts for Garry Law, Luca Petillo and South African fly half Warren Seals.

Last Saturday's 40-14 home win against Fylde came too soon for Petillo to make his comeback from injury, but he and lock Rob Conquest will be in the frame tomorrow.

It was decided that skipper Gareth Nesbit would make his comeback from the bench against Fylde, allowing Darren Fearn to start at loose head.

The 20st Scarborough-born player, who joined from Sale just over a year ago, proved his worth with a hat-trick of tries in the second quarter of the match.

Fearn battered his way over from close range each time before making way for Nesbit shortly after the break.

Prior to his first try the game was scoreless and had the makings of a tight contest. But Fylde proved under-powered compared with the top sides in National One.

Fylde are ninth, while Mowden moved up a place to sixth, but the match underlined the gulf below the top eight.

It was a disappointing day for RFU chairman Bill Beaumont, especially as his son Sam, the Fylde No 8, was injured before half-time.

Mowden also suffered an early casualty in Jake Woodhouse, but not for the first time reserve scrum half Matt Walsh went on at full back and looked the part.

Young Joe Craggs enjoyed a profitable 80 minutes at open side, while blind side Rory Duff showed his skills when operating as a second fly half after the break.

Mowden dominated the scrums and, when they took one against the head, No 8 Ollie Hodgson made good ground before Fearn forced his way over in the left corner.

His second was a similar effort after the initial drive was halted following a penalty to the right corner.

A tight game still seemed possible when Fylde centre Scott Rawlings scored by the posts and converted, but by the 63rd minute Mowden led 40-7.

They scored their best try just before half-time. The excellent Hodgson exchanged passes with Bruno Bravo up the right flank before the ball was moved left and Fearn burst on to a short pass to complete his treble. Seals added the second of his five conversions for a 19-7 lead.

Mowden were so dominant in the first 25 minutes of the second half that they even stretched their lead while Bravo was in the bin.

Talite Vaioleti forced his way over, then another strong scrummage allowed Bravo to dart away on the short side before a switch pass sent winger Peter Homan through a gaping hole to the posts.

Centre Jamie Barnard wriggled out of a tackle to score from 15 metres before Fylde grabbed a consolation five minutes from time.

In Durham and Northumberland One, second-placed Middlesbrough came back from 16-10 down at half-time to win 28-16 at home to Consett.

Consett's feisty approach provided Boro with the sort of test they can expect at Horden tomorrow. But the visitors' indiscipline cost them dear, with a player being sent off for stamping in the second half.

Boro scored the first try from a break and off-load by Sam Gaudie to Euan Tremlett, who drew the full back and passed inside for Ali Lang to score under the posts. But they trailed 16-10 at half-time.

Gaudie's second penalty reduced the deficit to three points, then the ball popped loose from a ruck and James Pennington pounced to score.

Once Consett were reduced to 14, Boro capitalised. A Rhys Kilbride run was followed by a back-of-the-hand offload from captain Rob Bellerby to Joe Gaudie, who scored.

Minutes later, his brother Sam got the bonus point try after charging down a clearance.

Stockton lost 24-3 at Ryton and Darlington's 23rd straight defeat, by 78-5 at Hartlepool Rovers, took their points difference above the 1,000 mark. Darlington are at home to Medicals tomorrow.
