Jarrow Roofing had to make an unusual enforced substitution in their game against Bishop Auckland tonight.

Centre half and skipper Darryl Donnelly had to leave the field on half an hour because his partner was about to give birth in the local hospital, so he was quickly substituted by Paul Gardiner and he rushed to be with her.

But it wasn’t a happy night all round though, because Bishops won 2-1 and moved out of the bottom three.

Bishops took the lead on 25 minutes when the Roofing defence made a mess of clearing a corner, giving Thomas McAloon the opportunity to score from a few yards.

Bishops Andre Bennett hit the post before half time, and they scored a second on 65 minutes when McAloon controlled a long ball , beat a defender and fired home.

Roofing pulled a goal back from the penalty spot through Dennis Knight, but Bishops held on.

Newton Aycliffe are stuck in the bottom two after they lost 2-0 at home to North Shields.

They went behind on 38 minutes when Aycliffe defender Andrew Grant-Soulsby turned a Paul Robinson shot into his own net, and in the second half Kurt Matthews missed a chance for an equaliser.

Aycliffe keeper Jack McLaren made two good saves from Lee Mason, before Dean Holmes dribbled through for the second in the last minute.
