Newton Aycliffe deservedly won the Durham Challenge Cup for the first time in their history when they beat West Auckland 3-1 at Hetton yesterday morning.

Aycliffe are managed by former West boss Peter Dixon, and three former West players were on target to beat their former club, who were given a place in the final after Whickham were booted out earlier this week.

West took the lead after just four minutes when Liam Hudson’s left foot shot was turned into the net by Darren Richardson from a few yards.

Aycliffe then created and missed several good chances. Stuart Banks headed into the side netting, Matty Moffat headed against the post, and John Campbell dribbled through, rounded the keeper, but sidefooted wide.

West keeper David Knight saved well at the feet of Moffat at the start of the second half, but the goal that Aycliffe had been threatening finally came after 55 minutes, when Campbell volleyed just inside the post from the edge of the box.

Despite being on top, Aycliffe couldn’t finish the game in 90 minutes, but it was all over within five minutes of extra time beginning.

Setpiece specialist Dennis Knight put Aycliffe into the lead three minutes into extra time with a free kick from 25 yards into the bottom left corner, and two minutes later Paul Garthwaite made a good diagonal and beat David Knight with a left foot shot.

West tired completely after that, and David Knight had to make two more good saves.
