Boro confirm Rochemback departure

FABIO ROCHEMBACK has taken a step nearer a return to Portugal after Middlesbrough confirmed the departure of the Brazilian.

While also revealing that Spaniard Gaizka Mendieta and South Korean striker Dong-Gook Lee have also not had their contracts extended, it will be the exit of Rochemback which will hurt the squad the most.

Despite a largely frustrating few seasons on Teesside, the South American has remained an integral part of Southgate's crop of players.

But with his three-year contract up on June 30, Southgate has listened to the midfielder's demands and has opted not to take up the option of extending for a further year.

"We both feel that the time is right for Fabio to have a fresh challenge," said Southgate. "He is a talented footballer and I think he's just had his best season for us, while it was fitting that he should bow out against Manchester City on Sunday with probably his best performance in a Middlesbrough shirt."

Rochemback, who scored a stunning free-kick at the Riverside in the 8-1 win over City, is now expected to rejoin Sporting Lisbon. Brazilian clubs Gremio and Vasco de Gama are also interested.

Mendieta has spent the whole season playing for the reserves but the former Lazio man is weighing up his options before deciding on his next move.

The 34-year-old, part of the team that won the Carling Cup in 2004, once cost Lazio £30m.

And Lee, meanwhile, has found opportunities limited since arriving on a free transfer from Pohang Steelers in January 2007. He scored just twice in 11 starts and has not played since February.

Full-back Tony McMahon and striker Tom Craddock have been offered one-year deals to stay on Teesside.
