Hughes endures pain in Spain after strong start

| Tough time: Hughes |
SUNDERLAND racing driver Warren Hughes experienced a tough weekend during the third round of the Le Mans Series in Belgium.
Ahead of the race Hughes was buoyed by the fact that he would be partnered by former MG team-mate Johnny Kane and things started well with the pair qualifying in tenth place for the 1,000km race.
Once again the race started strongly, with the Embassy Zytec running in sixth place before being hit by another car. This forced major repairs to be carried out costing the team a lot of lost track time.
After the repairs the car once again ran strongly on the pace until clutch problems forced Kane to finally retire the car out on the circuit after four hours of running.
"We knew this was going to be a difficult weekend," said Hughes afterwards, "but once again we were pleased with the pace of the car, we just need to get these teething problems sorted - quickly."
Hughes and the team will now begin preparations for the biggest race of the year, the Le Mans 24 Hours, where the team will have a new low down force aero package for the car, crucial to achieve the expected top speed of 200mph plus down the daunting Mulsanne straight.
"It's been a difficult season for far, but I'm really looking forward to Le Mans, it's such a special event and the atmosphere is fantastic, especially with so many British fans there, said Hughes. It's the highlight of year for sure no matter what happens in the race."
Testing for the big event will take place in two weeks time ahead of the main race which will be held over the weekend of June 14-15.
