Burns returns in style
NEWCASTLE'S Chris Burns returned
to form in some style yesterday
as he twice recorded the
fastest lap of the day at the Bennettfs
British Superbikes round
three at Oulton Park.
Having finished 16th quickest
overall in a rain-affected race
one, Burns recorded a fastest lap
of 1:49.129 in the Superbike Cup
category and repeated the trick
in race two, improving his previous
best to 1:39.446 as he finished
18th.
"I said at the start of the year
I want to win the Superbike Cup
and that certainly remains the
focus after this performance,"
said Burns. "The bike is getting
progressively better."
Meanwhile, Shane Byrne's
first double in five years helped
him move clear at the top of the
BSB rankings.
Byrne moved clear of coleader
Cal Crutchlow, who could
only manage sixth in the first
race and crashed out in race two.
In a tantalising first race,
restarted after a five-bike crash,
Byrne withstood a late Leon
Haslam onslaught to keep the
HM Plant Honda rider in second.
Byrne's Airwaves Ducatti
team-mate Leon Camier joined
Byrne on the podium in both
races claiming third in race one
and went one better in race two.
Michael Rutter finished in
fourth place in the tricky wet
conditions.
Karl Harris' dismal start to
the season continued when he
crashed out on lap two in race
one and slid off again in race
two.
Last yearfs rookie of the year
Tom Sykes raced well in the first
race to claim fifth place but suffered
heartbreak in race two
when, leading the field, he collided
with Leon Haslam and
crashed out. James Ellison
grabbed his first podium finish
finishing third in race two.
