Disappointment as Wilks forced to retire

DARLINGTON rally driver Guy Wilks and co-driver Phil Pugh were forced to retire from Sunday's final leg of Rally of Canberra with mechanical failure.

Wilks held a superb fifth overall overnight in the front-wheel-drive Honda Civic Type R R3. But driveshaft failure halted their charge around 20km into Sunday's 28km opening stage.

Speaking on his website www.guywilks.com, he said: "It's a real shame. Everything was going well and we had just passed a car in the stage to move up to fourth place.

"I'm disappointed - but even more so for the guys at JAS Motorsport.

"They have done a great job with the car and I was determined to get a result for them and Honda Australia."

Cody Crocker won the rally in a Subaru Impreza WRX STi to extend his lead in the Asia-Pacific Rally Championship.

Wilks arrives back in Britain today, ready for a tarmac test with Mitsubishi Motors UK tomorrow.

The Jim Clark Rally - round two of the British Rally Championship - takes places on closed public roads in Berwickshire from May 23-25.
