SILVERSTONE Circuit, home of the British Grand Prix, has been given the green light by local authorities for a six million sq ft redevelopment of the venue, complete with a new pit and paddock complex along with a manufacturer test centre, business park, extreme sport and leisure facility, two hotels, a university campus and a Welcome Centre.

Representing a significant commitment to securing the future of the British Grand Prix, this week's approval of development plans for Silverstone is the first step towards delivering a world-class venue for motorsport, vehicle R&D, technology, education and leisure.

Richard Phillips, managing director of Silverstone Circuits Limited said: "The adoption of the Development Brief means that, for the first time in its long and illustrious history, the development of Silverstone is now being considered with an holistic approach. It is a methodology that will protect and secure Silverstone's status as a global leader and the home of motor racing."

The Development Brief sets out the Vision for the Circuit' over the next ten years and the principles of sustainable development that aim to maximise the social and economic benefits for the local and regional area. It also sets out the land use and infrastructure requirements against which any future planning application has to be assessed.

Robert Brooks, Chairman of the BRDC said: "Our members are excited about the future of Silverstone and welcome this essential step towards delivering the much needed improvement of facilities on the site."
