DESPITE the snow warnings, almost 60 competitors headed for Addingham Moorside and the annual Yeadon-Guiseley Motor Club D T Smith Trophy Trial last Sunday morning.

Richard Sadler braved the icy Wensleydale roads to compete, and won the trial from Faceby's Guy Kendrew and Headingley expert Liam Walker. Twenty-year-old Simone Wallis travelled from Hull to compete.

A covering of snow added more excitement for the 10 youngsters, some aged just four and five, riding in the almost Arctic conditions cooled by an easterly wind seemingly coming in from Siberia.

Guiseley official Mike Jennings and his team marked 10 mild sections for the 48 main course contenders. His care showed up with a low-scoring results sheet.

Sadler, who won the Northern Experts trial the previous week, rode every section four times without losing a single penalty.

Kendrew was right on target to match Sadler, but lost a single mark in the north wall section on lap one before matching every move by the winner.

The first five riders on the hard course got home on single-figure scores. Bradford's top youth contender Keiran Child finished sixth.

Only seven riders contested clubman A, which went to James Wainwright, from Keighley, ahead of Aaron Carter and Bellerby's Ryan Brown, two young riders climbing the ranks rapidly.

Harrogate building materials retailer Neil Gaunt won clubman B on his Beta machine.

Howard Gulley was on the losing end of a tie-breaker with Gaunt when he lost an early mark in section one, where Skipton veteran observer Mick Shorrock quietly froze at his post.

Predictably, Arran Sherwin, Mason Carter and Jimmy Crabtree won the three small wheels classes. Matilda Arbon and Summer Brooksbank tested the boys in the middle course category.

COLIN Ward took another win at Butsfield Quarry, in County Durham, last weekend ahead of seven others on the expert route of the latest offering from the Stanley Trials Club.

Carl Shaw took second place, 10 marks behind Ward, but just one mark less than Stephen Bennett.

Ward remained clean until he parted with five in section seven, plus another in the ninth.

Chris Laws had no competition on the green course, but David Braithwaite had nine others keeping him company on the clubman route and his loss of six put him in first place ahead of Colin Ward junior, with Martin Phillipson taking third on 18.

Colin Mills remained clean on the easy course, finishing ahead of Brian Ridley, who lost three separate marks in sections one, two and 10, and Cameron Brunskill finished on 20 on the conducted course.

THE Middle England Classic Club held their Davy Best Memorial Trial at Blaghill, near Alston, last weekend.

A total of 28 riders took part, including six on the conducted route.

With just one course, the trial proved a little easy for some riders, as shown by a clean sheet for Louis Grey, who was followed home by Anthony Stephen on one and Matty Ball on two.

Ball lost both his marks in section one and John Grey wasn't too far away with a couple of singles in sections three and four, plus a three in the ninth, as he finished fourth on a total of five.

Paul Lowther had trouble in section three, where he lost all his eight marks, to finish sixth, just behind Graham Knight. Sam Armstrong took the hard conducted win and Charlie Nicholson topped the easy conducted class.

THE Richmond Motor Club had no option but to cancel the Eric Ridley Trial scheduled for last Sunday at Hurst.

Access road conditions to the remote venue and snowbound moors were the primary causes of the cancellation after Richmond officials visited the area on Saturday afternoon.

No plans have been made regarding a new date for the trial, but the Richmond committee will discuss the situation.
