KIRKBYMOORSIDE Gas Gas rider Jack Peace secured his eighth victory of the year at Liege, in Belgium, last Sunday to be crowned world 125cc trials champion.

The young rider has proved the strongest rider in his category throughout the season, building on some magnificent results at the beginning of the season to take the fast track to the world 125cc title with two big prizes still to compete for before the end of the season.

RICHMOND Motor Club were one step ahead of the weather at Applegarth, Marske, last Saturday when a field of 70 riders competed in an easy trial on some parts of the Scott Trial course.

The 10-section, four-lap event even featured the final section of the famous October event, the rocky Clapgate climb which heralds the end of an ordeal for the fortunate few.

With a weather forecast threatening four seasons in as many hours, the Richmond course planners opted for an easy ride and it worked well.

Darren Fowler, Nick Royle and Steve Watling topped the adult class after turning in single-figure penalties. Sam Charlton, Ollie Rickaby and Dan Hodgson more than upheld the youth classes, who rode the same course.

Young Tom Needham turned the clock back to 1971 when he rode Kit Macey's 250cc Bultaco into third place in the twin shock class behind Watling and Paul Turner.

The only downside on the day was when young Charlie Dent rode the wrong side of a section nine marking flag, incurring a prompt five-mark penalty. That error cost him a class B victory.

On a separate course, 11 small wheelers did their own thing through six sections which were basically dampish, grassy gradients. Top of the classes were Rory Wilkinson, Riley Plumpton and Cameron Brunskill, while mention must also be made of Lily-Ann Thwaite's third place and a debut ride on her shiny new Oset for Martha Dennis.

ROUND five of the Stanley Trials Club's Wednesday evening series went ahead at Butsfield Quarry recently, when Scott Aitkin matched the clean ride of Colin Ward on the clubman route. Scott Cousins wasn't far behind.

Richard Cousins rode the easy course on one penalty, giving him a two-mark cushion over Chris and Rob Church and Ian Medley.

WOLFCLEUGH Farm, near Rookhope, was the venue for the latest trial from the Weardale and District Motor Club last weekend, and their efforts were rewarded with a fine entry of 73 riders making the trip into the dale.

Stephen Dalton and Jack Biggins both dropped one mark on the expert route, with Dale Robson just behind on two. The tie decider went in favour of Dalton as he went furthest clean.

The regular battle between Eddie Aitkin and Carl Shaw on the green route went to Aitkin. The same hazard took two off Shaw, who had already dropped another in section seven, but his total of three put him well clear of third-placed Colin Barrie.

Gavin Brown was steady on the clubman route, his five single marks putting him a further five ahead of D Johnson, with Josh Fenton on 15 completing the first three. Johnson would have made it a bit more interesting but for his five in section two, where few marks were lost.

Wetherby D.M.C. 4th Norman Crooks Trophy Championship, Dacre, Saturday.

Wetherby and District Motor Club paid their usual visit to Hill Top Farm for the fourth round of the Norman Crooks Trophy Championship last Saturday, when 10 sections in the depths of the wood west of the farm, mostly in the shallow stream, taxed 36 competitors.

On foot, the stream appeared daunting, but Joel Sadler only dropped a boot four times. Two marks were lost on the steep, muddy exit to section four, where only Dave Mawer mastered the section on every lap.

Wetherby head for Toft Gate Farm on July 23 for the next Crooks trial. The start time will be 5.30pm.
