THE time spent by enthusiastic clerk of course Frank Hildrick and his team of assistants paid dividends as the Scarborough and District Motor Club's two-day pre-65 trial produced a great weekend of sport.

Good weather prevailed, although it was showery on Saturday, as more than 100 riders converged on Low North Park, Harwood Dale.

Guisborough's Mark Buckworth piloted his James round for just one mark lost over the entire two days and only Peter Edwards, riding the pre-65 clubman route, bettered his score.

It was a relatively easy route on the first day, although it included some tricky sections, and Richard Harrison, Chris Monkman, Jon Frost, Steve Kirkwood and Richard Hildrick all admitted to a few fives between them. But Keighley's John Feather produced a remarkable ride on his rigid-framed Ariel, dropping only four marks, three on the difficult fourth section. He also kept it together on Sunday to finish on a total of eight.

Knowing they needed consistency on the large machines, Buckworth, Colin Bailey and Alistair Jackson had some moments on the first day, but somehow hung on. Last year's winner Bailey remained clean along with Buckworth, Jackson dropping one on the fifth and Kevin Chapman needing one to keep the Triumph going on the sixth.

Mike Watson was unlucky with a puncture that robbed him of two marks on the graded hill and eventual twin shock winner Rick Jackson was also rock steady on two lost.

Other riders clean overnight were Edwards, Geoff Brooker and air-cooled winner Mike Evans.

Bailey appeared the coolest of the leading bunch, tweaking the Ariel through and over the awkward angled rocks of the sixth for a clean as if on a modern bike. Buckworth parted with a dab here, while clubman twin shock winner Andrew Lockwood prodded.

Watson and Callum Williamson went for five marks lost and a quick dip in the river over the fallen tree of section nine to drop off the pace. This left Bailey the only rider clean, apart from Edwards on the clubman route.

The tide turned for Bailey at the start of his third lap when he took a flag out on the very first section, his only marks lost over the entire weekend.

Whitby's Nev Pybus, Greeves-mounted, climbed quietly up the rankings with a fantastic clean ride, the only one of the day, to grab the runner-up berth, and Buckworth nervously hung on for just one mark lost.

THE Alwinton Two-Day Trial, organised by the Bedlington Motor Club, is now the highlight event on the northern trials calendar.

A massive 200 entries illustrates how the event has grown in six years, attracting riders from as far afield as Spain, and this year it was attended by multi-British trials champion and former world star Steve Saunders, enjoying time out with his son James.

Day one saw Saunders finish on 15, enough to claim third spot ahead of Michael Phillipson, but trailing three times past winner John Crinson and Tom Affleck, who both finished on 14.

Last year's clubman winner Glen Scholey was back for more on the same RTL Honda as last year, taking the overnight lead along with Darren Wasley, who matched him in that class.

Eric McMeekin, aboard his Drayton Bantam, was having the ride of his life, losing just three on the easy route.

Wasley turned in a tremendous ride on Sunday to leave Scholey trailing in his wake, eventually taking the clubman win by 12 marks after going round for a miserly two, compared with the 14 of his nearest rival.

Stuart Gaskell and Dale Whittaker missed out via the tie-breaker after they had matched Scholey's score.

McMeekin was never going to be caught on the easy course after his overnight lead, and with another three added to his Saturday score, he finished well ahead of John Charlton, although the runner-up did upstage the winner by going round without penalty on day two.

LEYBURN joiner Richard Sadler continued his winning spree at Wildboarclough last Sunday when he rode his Acklam Beta to victory in the national Dave Rowland Trophy Trial.

He signed off with just two penalties on his card, with Richard Timperley and Andrew Cripps placed second and third. Londoner Chris Koch won the clubman class.

JAMES Dabill recorded his fifth consecutive British trials championship victory in Devon last Saturday, beating Ipswich Beta contender Jack Sheppard and Denby Dale JST Gas Gas teamster Jack Price.

Kirkbymoorside teenager Jack Peace maintained his domination in the youth category, heading Ulster's Josh Hanlon and Bradford 15-year-old Keiran Child.
