RICHARD Sadler was back in the driving seat at Reels Head last Sunday when he won the Darlington Motor Club's trial from Hurworth expert Rob Waite and national star Guy Kendrew.

The Leyburn joiner emphasised his return to top form by riding the entire Graham Sanderson course without any penalties. As usual, the Darlington event attracted a class entry of 63 contenders who rode a four-lap, 10-section course in the heartlands of the Scott Trial. The direction from the start near Marrick crossroads broke tradition by travelling anti-clockwise, with four sections above the Hurst road looking right across the valley to Holgate.

The route then plunged over Fremington Edge, affording a fine view of Swaledale for those that dared take their eyes off the limestone rocks trying to snatch a front wheel. The eighth, ninth and final sections were on the run-in to the end of the lap.

The Darlington crew marked the final section as a hill climb where speed and accuracy was the key to success. The clubmen turned off the climb before the more severe yards prevented serious progress.

SCARBOROUGH and District Motor Club ran the second round of their club championship at Low North Park last Sunday, attracting more than 100 riders, with Michael Todd securing the win.

Held over four laps, the trial's first two hazards in Aubrey's Gully saw both Todd and runner-up Russ Rooksby lose double figures, but Todd proved outstanding at the third.

Clubman A had a relatively steady day until the last hazard, where Pete Race observed, and the series of log steps after a gripless turn saw marks rise. Winner Alan Williams proved best with 13 lost as third-place man Mike Noble struggled with a maximum, as did Darren Johnson and Andy Woodall.

The youth side continues to grow after a dismal spell as George McGee conducted trials appear to have an effect, with Matilda Arbon, from Marske, rising to the challenge on the hard route to win by a good margin and Sam Carter holding off a determined challenge from Mason Wilford and Louie McGee to win the easy route by one mark.

RIPON Motor Club played the numbers game at Fir Tree Farm last Saturday evening when the club staged the second Acklams Beta Summer Championship trial at the Grewelthorpe venue.

No doubt about the popularity of the trials series as 115 competitors, aged from five to 70, signed their entry forms. Thirteen classes competed on a full 10-section, four-lap course, while 14 very young contenders rode their own separate sections.

Adam Blacker and his son Aldis took charge of the small wheelers and headed for the duck pond area, where the ground was soft and the rocks and exposed tree roots took the marks.

On the main course, Paul Brown and Chris Laws dominated the results by winning overall and taking first and second places in the over-40s category. Novice winner Josh Swiers trailed the duo by some 17 penalties.

A two-and-a-half-hour marking out and cutting back session the previous Wednesday evening by Keith Blythe and his volunteers produced seven sections on the slopes above the narrow stream and a further three across the water, including a hill-climb tester.

Gavin Houson headed the novice green course by 10 marks from the experienced Michael Benson.

Michael Platts had Rob Shepherd and Mick Grant on his case in the twin-shock division, while Martha Dennis delivered the right result in Class E.

Beth Watling won the youth green class, which bettered her father Steve's third place in the over-40s class.

The next Acklams Beta events are on June 11 and June 25.

A FIELD of 37 riders turned up at Butsfield Quarry, near Castleside, last Sunday when the Stanley club stepped in to run the event after the original trial was cancelled.

Dale Robson, on a rare outing, took the expert win on one, closely followed by Simon Winfield on four, three ahead of Jonathan Taylor. The second section seemed to be one of the toughest and the winner's clean sheet here put him in the driving seat for the rest of the day.

Just two riders went for the green route, where Gary Broomfield was well clear of runner-up Michael Spence, with marks of 36 and 57 respectively.

Martin Phillipson was pushed all the way for his clubman win, his one mark in section one his only mistake all day. However, after cleaning section one, Andy Pearson missed out after losing a couple in sections six and seven, and Kian Dawson was another to go close with his two going in sections three and four.

On the easy course, it took a tie-breaker to split Paul Martin and Chris Church, who both finished on five, Martin

getting the verdict after going furthest clean. Gary Daykin was in the hunt until a five in section three ruined his chances.
