BETA rider Ian Austermuhle won Hull AC's Kennington Cup charity trial last Sunday and helped the host club win the Inter Club Trophy.

Held at the fantastic Wether Hill venue in Farndale, the trial buzzed early on with news of Dan and Jack Peace's double win in Japan.

Sticking to the two-lap, 20-section format that works so well in sorting the men from the boys, fantastic riding from the experts went a long way to keeping the hardy observers warm on a bitterly cold day.

Austermuhle, Tom Affleck, Rob Waite and Andy Chilton were all in terrific form, with Chilton possibly just ahead on the first lap after great rides on 11 and 12. But his challenge hit trouble midway round the second lap and he retired. Austermuhle's consistency saw him through to the win as Affleck challenged, posting best ride of the day on the 10th hazard, the only rider to clean each visit.

Rob Carter and Shane Monkman enjoyed a great tussle for the inter award, Carter stealing the win by one mark, but the real stars were twin shock victors Colin Bailey and Mark Smith, who went head to head on identical machinery, the big, thumping 500cc Ariels, to finish on equal marks. Bailey edged it on most cleans. The pair proved that 50 years of technology in bike building is still no match for talent, beating all that the modern machinery had to offer in clubman B, the experienced Elliot Acaster taking this win from Paul Nelson.

LOUIS Grey put in an unbeatable clean ride on the expert route to claim top spot in the Stanley Club's trial at Pea Farm, in County Durham, last Saturday, but Jason Scott wasn't far behind on one and Gary Pears missed out after a couple in sections seven and eight.

Scott Aitkin was in a class of his own on the clubman route, his two marks also coming in sections seven and eight, but this left him 11 marks ahead of runner-up Gary Broomfield, while Steven Emberson finished third on 18. Chris Church's single mark came in section seven, but this put him well clear of Peter Booth and Leslie Mavin, who finished on seven and nine respectively.

RICHMOND MC’s fundraising event at Gilling West last Saturday attracted 76 competitors in support of the Crabtree Trial.

Twelve age and machine classes rode a 10-section, four-lap course, while 13 small wheel youngsters rode their own three-lap, eight-section trial. Only clubman victor Nick Royle covered the entire course without incurring any penalties, but Scorton’s Chris Laws was near until he lost a single mark in section eight on his final lap.

Youth winner Guy Stones also lost a single mark, on section six on lap two, where rival Robert Weatherill lost all his marks.

TV star Guy Martin entered the International Pre-65 Two-Day Trial at Kinlochleven last Saturday for a fun ride and finished last out of 200 entrants. But 23 did not complete the course, so Martin was placed 167th.

Dan Clark (Haworth) won the trial after losing three penalties, while Sedgefield's Eddie Aitken was sixth. David Watson rode Ken Raw's Royal Enfield to 13th place after jetting in from Western Australia, while Stuart Blythe took 22nd place behind sidecar ace Robin Luscombe and Harrogate's former winner Tony Calvert.
