WITH the Guisborough and District Motor Club's usual venue of Ellers Farm too wet for the first club series trial, they staged it at their Slapewath practice ground at Charltons last Saturday evening with a strong entry of more than 70 riders.

On a bitterly cold night for observers, Tom Affleck, showing fantastic form at present, grabbed the win.

David Pye, still a force to be reckoned with in the trials game, slotted into the runner-up berth ahead of Chris Barnfather after the latter lost five on the relatively easy fourth section.

Middlesbrough's Chris Brown topped the intermediate class from Luke Jackson, but it was age to the fore in the clubman B and twin-shock classes as Paul Nelson and Joe Buckworth edged the wins, although Buckworth did admit "I was gifted the win after Mark's (Buckworth) chain snapped."

There was a strong turnout of youngsters as George McGee continues to build the youth side, and the Arbon family dominated with Matilda taking the hard course win and sister Eliza claiming the easy course laurels.

A GOOD turnout of 42 riders made their way to Ayle, near Alston, on the Durham and Cumbria border, for the Durham Trials Club event last Sunday.

John Crinson took the win on 20, while Gary Pears was steady enough to pinch second place on 61 aboard his trusty Scorpa. After spending the best part of three hours observing, Paul Nicholson set out to ride four swift laps for another bit of good Scottish training.

The clubman class also had it tough and winner Dean Morten headed home Steven Stamper and Richard Hawes by just one and two marks respectively, with these three the only riders keeping their scores under 50.

The last section was the hardest by far on all courses, with Stamper best here on 14.

Andy Lewis took his SWM to the easy course win on 27, five fewer than Derek Bainbridge, while third-placed Michael Minns performed best on the last section, losing 11 of his total here.

RIPON and District Motor Club staged the opening Acklams Beta Summer Championship at Mr Richardson's Home Farm last Saturday afternoon for all classes, starting at novice status and descending to class E small wheels.

The entry figure indicated just how popular the series has become as 114 competitors arrived at the legendary scrambles circuit at Hutton Conyers.

Aldis Blacker won the novice class from Rob Bradley as both went round on two marks, while rally driver Mark Constantine also went into a tie-breaker with Mark Whelan at the top of the green class.

Two names came up in the class E results, Riley Plumpton and his support team and seven-year-old Martha Dennis, who rode an Oset 16 in her very first trial and finished third in class.

THE second event in the Acklams Beta Ladies' Championship at Hatcliffe last Saturday was a sensational trial and maybe unique as there was hardly a rock in sight.

World and British champion Emma Bristow cleaned every section on all three laps to top the ladies' class A from Becky Cook and Donna Fox. Skeeby championship newcomer Chloe Richardson was sixth adult and Hurworth's Beth Waite was eighth.

The Yorkshire Centre's best under-21 all-rounder Beth Dunning won the ladies' inter class, in which Hannah Richardson was placed sixth. Chloe's younger sister Niamh won class intermediate.

County Durham girls Amy Turpin and Molly Mayhew were seventh and eighth in class B, while Amelia Mayhew followed up her fourth place at the North Berks opener by winning class C.

Poppy Fletcher was up against the fourth member of the Richardson team, Amber. The latter rode her Beta 80, while Poppy is riding the Oset until she gets the Beta to turn.
