THERE was a fantastic battle between Andy Chilton and Dan and Jack Peace for Hull AC's Embro Cup last Sunday, the former snatching it by just three marks and Jack level with Dan on seven marks to win Youth A after three laps and 12 sections around Low North Park.

After a rough Saturday for the marking out crew, Mark Williamson and gang, the weather was cold and sharp for the trial, but the massive entry of 120 soon steamed up on the challenging course.

A relatively easy starter saw Mark Cottingham and Chris Alford lose three, but it was the second, where Harold Wilson observed, that possibly decided the result.

After three superb cleans, Dan Peace hit it wrong on the last lap and needed his long legs to propel him out of the section.

Chilton was the only faultless rider on every lap.

Adam Milner made a welcome return to trials on a new Acklams Beta, winning the intermediate class, with Shane Monkman putting a solid ride together to shade the runner-up berth from Pete Sharp.

Milner excelled on the third section at Aubrey's gully, losing just one mark to Monkman and Sharp's 11 and 13 respectively.

Colin Bailey jumped straight back to the top of the clubman A class with a win over Consett's Stephen Bennett, Matt Sharp taking third and Paul Nelson again grabbing the class B category under pressure from Mark Jewell and Jamie Thompson.

Dave Lees, taking a break from placing flags for other riders, said: "It's great to be riding my bike without carrying flags about." He enjoyed his ride, taking the win from Nicola Dixon on the white route.

IT came as no great surprise that only 16 competitors headed for Yatts Farm at Newton on Rawcliffe on Sunday morning for Pickering and District Motor Club's easy trail.

A week of more or less heavy rain and the prospect of a soaking was an effective deterrent for the less dedicated trialers. But the "old school" never miss a chance and it was Andy Thorpe who shaded Dave Almack in the adult mono class on a tie-breaker, leaving Bill Gamble to salvage third place. Only 13 contested the class, while Will Bratley headed Tom Grant in the twin shock category.

Young Jack Darrell battled all alone and was fifth overall in the adult results.

The sections were marked simple and straight on Friday, with no tricky turns or cambers. The larch trees at the top of the meadow featured, as did the disused quarry, which provided some hardware and grip. The sixth and seventh scaled the low wall, while the ninth climbed the hill and circled one of the trees. That section turned out to be the tester.

The club will run again at Yatts on January 17, when the 2016 season fires up in earnest.

MORE than 50 Richmond Motor Club members assembled with their parents on Sunday afternoon for the annual youth awards function at Richmond Cricket Club.

Club director Steve Lambert welcomed the 150 parents, grandparents and children.

John Sunter presented all the awards to 50 youngsters and the awards ceremony was followed by a buffet supper and a bike balancing competition judged by Charlotte, Ros and Andrew Brown. A colouring competition was judged by Vera Watson and Diane Horner. A raffle raised £355, which will be donated to the Butterwick Hospice.

The ages ranged from four to 16 and one little boy, Ben Sunter, was presented with his first-ever trophy by his father, yet another member of the Healaugh farming family following in the footsteps of his grandfather, Richard.

Mr Lambert closed the evening by thanking Vicky Andrews for her work sorting out awards and youth secretary Sandra Fowler, Chris Wallis and Charlotte and Ros Brown for their work in the youth events throughout the year.

RICHMOND Motor Club reluctantly cancelled the annual Christmas trial at Applegarth last Saturday afternoon. Land conditions and adverse weather forecasts culminated in an 11th hour decision to axe the easy and small wheels trial.

Meanwhile, the Consett and District Motor Club cancelled their trial scheduled for last Sunday. Waterlogged venues accounted for yet another cancellation.
