FORESTRY manager Ian Austermuhle won the Scott Trial last Saturday from Alexz Wigg and Dougie Lampkin, ending a 19-year quest for victory in the 100-year-old Yorkshire Dales event.

The Malton competitor rode his Beta UK machine in his usual effortless style to beat Winslow's Wigg by four penalties. Former winner Lampkin was on track to put the new Vertigo machine at the top of the results, but a minor electrical component fault on his prototype machine slowed the Silsden rider in his progress round the all-moorland, 80-mile course in the Swaledale hills.

Lampkin was in another class through the 76 observed sections, dropping just 25 penalties. The time penalties added another 24 marks to make his final score of 49. Just seven penalties covered the first three finishers.

The 2011 winner, Jonathan Richardson, set the fastest time of 4:42.22 after Skipton builder John Sunter set the pace until the last five miles, when his Honda machine sustained a puncture. He went from pace-setter to 17th place in a flash, but a silver spoon award at least tempered his disappointment.

Only four penalties separated Richardson, Richard Sadler and Ross Danby, while Denby Dale teenager Jack Price topped the awards list for the coveted silver spoons. A total of 101 riders qualified for awards or a finisher's certificate out of the 197 contenders.

All the official spectator sections were listed in the official programme, but many ultra-keen trials followers walked to distant sections. The Reels Head group of sections halfway up lofty Fremington Edge was the focal point on the run to the finish.

Arkengarthdale youngster Thomas Coates competed in the Mintex Youth Trial in June, but by this month he was riding the toughest one-day trial in Europe, if not the world.

The teenager kept his head and brought his Sherco home in 82nd place, probably one of the youngest to survive the physical and mental punishment.

Richard Ridley, who lives close to the Scott Trial course near Hurst, rides only two trials a year and one of them is the Scott. Despite no special build-up for the tough test of stamina and strength, he has completed the course for the past eight years.

On Saturday, he finished in 79th place, just behind Skeeby’s Chloe Richardson.

At the awards ceremony at Richmond Cricket Club, there was no doubt that Austermuhle was a popular winner after 19 years of trying. His skill, manners and ability are a great example to all and he has never changed.

THE Bradford and District Motor Club opted for Howden Wood, high above Silsden, as the venue for the final club championship trial of the season on Sunday.

Jason Dunning stepped in as clerk of the course and then competed, only to be beaten on the clubman route by his daughter, Beth. The Crossflatts teenager was more than happy.

Three section routes were marked out and all three afforded a very low-scoring trial, just right for all ages and abilities. Trawden's Thomas Rushton rode the entire main course without penalty to beat Guiseley's Sam Jennings and Andy Holker, while Keighley teenager Jacob Snowdon won the youth class.

Shaun Hazelwood and Simon Armstrong rode the 50/50 and easy routes with a loss of one mark.

HORSFORTH and District MC's Simon Green Championship series headed north to Greenhow on Sunday for round six in the series, where 48 contenders rode a five-lap, eight-section course near the famous Stump Cross Caverns.

Rob Bratley headed the harder clubman course from Rob Hardisty, but it was a lucky overall win for Ian Brogden, who enjoyed an easier ride after Hardisty paused to admire the splendid vista of Nidderdale. The only problem was he stopped in sections two and four on the first lap. Fortunately, the two front-runners were in different classes.

Andy Brooksbank won the easy course, leaving daughters Olivia and Summer to do their own thing. Olivia took a class B award, but Summer missed the cut in the small wheels easy class.

BOLLIHOPE Common was the venue for the latest North-East Centre Championship trial, held by the Weardale Motor Club on Sunday. It attracted 83 starters, who faced three laps of 12 sections, with the weather just holding off until everyone finished.

Jack Biggins was in fine form on the expert route, taking the win on three marks, six fewer than runner-up Carl Shaw, who had an escape in the last section on his first lap when he made a miraculous recovery to record a clean on the long stream hazard. Anthony Stephens pushed Shaw hard all day, but had to settle for third on 11.

Alistair Dalton went round the clubman route without loss. He had to be at his best as James Black and Gareth Martin were right behind him. They both lost one mark in section two on their first lap, so could not be separated for second spot.

Kevin Edmundson chose his Bultaco twin-shock for the day and finished top of the easy course runners.
