GUISBOROUGH DMC turned the clock back for a good oldfashioned no-stop trial on Sunday at Westerdale, in the Esk Valley.

Jack Howell, from Port Mulgrave, was in superb form to win by six marks from Yarm’s Sherco rider Tom Affleck.

The four-lap, ten-section course covered the spectacular valley side of Westerdale, the vast moorside and huge monolith rocks creating tough, natural sections.

Howell’s marks were lost on sections four seven and eight and Affleck matched him all the way until failing the jump on to the last huge rock step of Harold Wilson’s to collect five marks on his score.

Castleton’s Mark Raw came out of retirement for this one to win Intermediate class from Gary Collinson and Mark Harrison, who rode a beautifully prepared Yamaha.

Yarm’s Richard Simpson hit form on the tougher sections to win Clubman A from Middlesbrough’s Barry Chapman, but ride of the day came from Lealholm’s Alistair Jackson.

Out on a Honda TLR, he also turned the clock back to remember the practice days of his youth on this land more than 20 years ago and won the Clubman B win by two marks from the modern machinery of Pickering’s Martin Peirson, Andrew Dale and John Stones.

SCARBOROUGH & DMC began their 2014 Club Championship series on a cold, overcast weekend with an entry of 75 riders at Low North Park.

Leavening’s Adam Milner was at his best to take the Master class win from Ollie Kendra, from Pocklington, by 11 points.

Milner lost his total of nine on the bank side climb at the old Bailey Bridge and cleaned everything else, while teenager Kendra hit trouble at the notorious Aubrey’s Gully with ten lost, while Milner cleaned every visit.

Kirkby Stephen’s Tom Alderson rode a Sherco and stamped his authority on the Intermediate class with a fine win over Gary Collinson.

Gary’s son Zac did go one better though to seal Youth B class win from Ben Teasdale, while Thornton-le-Dale’s Kate Hunter showed just why she is a force to be reckoned with in Clubman B with a cracking ride, edging the win from Paul Pulman by the tightest of margins.

James Wainwright almost blew the Clubman A class as he gave the front mudguard close inspection after hitting the last three-foot rock step last lap at Top Rocks but his unpenalised ride on section two eased him to the win.

Hard riding Elliot Woodall, from Scarborough, lifted Youth C class.

IT was the first round of the 2014 Weardale Club’s Saturday Afternoon Series last weekend, with more than 40 riders turning out at the Rogerley Quarry venue above Frosterley, in County Durham.

Gary Hall had single prods in sections two and eight, but this was enough to get the better of Dale Whittaker, who lost out after a three in the last section put paid to his chances.

Kevin Chapman battled round on his Triumph to claim third place on six.

Steve Holmes and Dave Hoskings battled it out on the Novice route, with nothing in it at the finish apart from more cleans from the former, which would give Holmes the win after they had both dropped eight. The winner was going well until a five in section which almost lost him the win.

Ray Cummings went clean on the Easy route – the only rider to do so.

FOR the second week running, Carl Shaw topped the Expert class, this time in Consett and DMC’s offering at Butsfield Quarry, in County Durham, the latest North- East Centre Championship trial, which attracted more than 70 riders, on Sunday.

The majority of Shaw’s marks were dropped at the third and ninth sections, but his total of 39 would put him well ahead of John and Stephen Bennett, who would finish on 61 and 62 respectively.

Jack Biggins rocked the Clubman route, the B class rider having a cracking ride to take the win ahead of some well experienced adults and fellow youth riders. Six of Jack’s nine marks went on the waterfall section, where the tight turns approach made the climb up the side very tricky. Jason Scott was best here with four, which helped him to second overall.

FIVE years of close co-operation with Richmond Motor Club ended recently when cricket club pavilion couple Vivien and John Lowes said their goodbyes.

Richmond MC have used the excellent facilities for all their awards functions. The Scott Trial and Youth Awards evening saw the pavilion packed.

The Lowes were bike friendly and that alone guaranteed great social gatherings.

The couple are moving to the Durham area to take up new options.
