How to write for the web

Here are some simple tips to make sure your article looks great and can be found by people using search engines, such as Google.

1. Add regular line breaks

Nobody likes to read a big block of text - especially online. Add a line break after each sentence and our system will look for those breaks and create whitespace between them, making your article much more readable.

2. Include keywords in your headline

Keywords in your headline will not only help readers find your article via search engines such as Google but will also allow readers to quickly see which articles are of interest to them. Keywords can include the team name, league name, competition, and/or the key team member(s) you are writing about.

This headline is ok: Rosie dominates North-East championships

This headline is better: Durham City Harrier Rosie Smith dominates at North-East Cross Country Championships

3. Add keywords to picture captions

If you've gone to the trouble of adding keywords to the headline, why not add them to the caption as well. Make your captions as descriptive as possible when the information is available.

This caption is ok: Competitors in a North-East cross country championship in Newcastle

This caption is better: Durham City Harrier Dan Garbutt chases the leaders during the Senior Men's North Eastern Cross Country Chanpionships, Town Moor, Newcastle

4. Bold the text of team or league names

If you are writing about multiple teams in a league, or multiple leagues, bold the text of those names in the article so readers can see the section that’s of most interest to them quickly and easily. The bold and italic options can be found above the main article text box. Highlight the text you wish to modify and click the B or I to bold or italicise.
