Richmond Motor Club, Carpley Green Trial Carlton, Sunday

SHEFFIELD’S Gavin Black won the Gerald Simpson Carpley Green Trial in sunny Coverdale on Sunday where Richmond club staged the trial for what was a prestige Yorkshire Dales event.

Ninety seven entries were taken for the trial despite the fact that the Scottish Six Days event ended the previous afternoon. For those who competed at the new venue it was a low scoring four lap ten section trial.

The venue was the starting point for the national Wainwright Shield Trial thirty year ago.

Richard Fraser continued his novice class winning run ahead of Tom Needham and Tom Hudson. Fraser had a twenty four penalty buffer over his rivals.

Forty three clubman contenders featured all the top local names. Adrian Harrison was the only competitors to hand in a single figure score with Steven Hind, Anthony Stephen, Thomas Coates and Coverdale farmer Steve Lambert in the running.

The latter though was riding an elderly Yamaha maybe used to round up cattle and sheep. The trial brought a spate of Over 40’s and 50’s. Barnsley’s Neil Savage made the trip with his daughter Megan who contest the clubman class while Glen Quinn and Kyle Deswert descended from the north east area.

In the Over 50’s ranks Barnsley motorcycle dealer Tony Kaye ran away with the top award from Leeds plant hire director Nigel Crowther and Ilkley heating engineer Andy Tales. The Richmond club return to Coverdale on May 26/27 for the annual Blue Bar Trial.

Ripon Motor Club, Acklams Beta Summer Series, Galloway Pastures, Greenhow, Saturday

THE Ripon club hit the high notes at Galloway Pastures on Saturday afternoon when finally the club got their Acklams Beta Summer Championship series moving.

The opening event should have been at Hutton Conyers mid-April at Home Farm but the land was waterlogged.

The sixteen small wheelers had more of the same nature with only two of the five sections featuring any hardware.

It was special day for nine year old Martha Dennis who switched to fossil fuel Beta after two seasons on an Oset.

Event Secretaries Judith Blythe and Heather Langstaff processed one hundred and nine entry forms of which ninety three adults rode the full course.

Otley novice Joe Bradley won the class from Tunstall’s Oliver Richardson and Leyburn’s Joe Alderson.

The novice Green course was a tight battle but Paul Pattison hung in on just two marks from a quartet of Tom Peacock, Chris Horsley, Chris Laws and Ian Brogden.

Steve Gossop took the Twin Shock class riding his pristine BSA Bantam on a tie breaker from Mick Platts who was testing a new clutch on his Honda TLR.

The Small Wheels contingent were either up, or down. Charlie Astwood took the hard route which did feature to steep drops and grassy climbs that were slippery.
