A NEW trophy was presented in memory of a much-loved hockey player who died in March after a long battle with cancer.

Sandra Horner was voted as the first winner of the Nick Race Yorkshire Lionheart Cup by the members of Northallerton Hockey Club.

The club's annual awards dinner was held at the Golden Lion in Northallerton on Friday. Nick's family, who donated the trophy, attended to help present it for the first time.

Horner, who is captain of the club's seconds, led the team to second position in Yorkshire League division five north and hopefully promotion.

She was top scorer, while Jess Thurlow won the award for most player of the match votes and was voted second team players' player.

First team top goal scorer was Emily Crisp, Becky Carson won the most player of the match votes, and Sarah McDonald was voted players' player.

Brooke Hodgson, whose stellar performances for the seconds saw her break into the first team mid-way through the season, was voted the club's most improved under 21.
