ROYAL Oak Malton beat Wombleton Wanders the holders in the Gordon Harrison Memorial Trophy Final on Friday night with the game played on Pickering Town’s Mill Lane ground and attracting a crowd of 136, the game was end to end although Wombleton had the better chances and Royal Oak defended for their lives in a sporting final, a neutral supporter said after the game how good to see a game of football without any swearing either on or off the pitch, a credit to the League.

The first real chance of the game came in the 10th minute when Dean Pratt set-up Adam Cook for Royal Oak but his effort went over the crossbar, however, it was Royal Oak who took the lead in the 20th minute when Pratt crossed the ball from the left wing for Michael Linsley to score and put his side into the lead.

Wombleton came back strong with several first half chances, Tom Ellis thought he had equalised in the 22nd minute but somehow James Langthorne raced back to clear the ball off the goal line, Luke McLaren had four good chances – three going wide and the fourth produced a superb save by Rob Campbell he Wombleton keeper. Wombleton also had Tim Sharples caution in the first half.

Within a minute of the re-start in the second half Wombleton were level, Danny Butterworth raced clear down the right wing, he crossed the ball low, somehow the ball bobbled over the Royal Oak keeper John Towse and Jake Dennison as there to blast the ball into the goal with his right foot, 1-1. In the next 20 minutes Wombleton had three good chances, Ellis crossed to Dennison whose effort went over the crossbar after 55 minutes, a minute later Ellis had an effort saved by Towse, and in the 65th minute a well taken 35 yard free kick by Luke Mclaren went over the crossbar, the later part of the second half fizzled out so a penalty shoot-out was the order of the night.

Royal Oak went first, Mikey Brown scored, Luke McLaren equalised, Ben Webster sent his wide for Royal Oak, Jack Walsh scored to make it 2-1 to Wombleton, Scott Palmer scored for Royal Oak as did Josh Tateson for Wombleton, James Langthorne scored for Royal Oak, Danny Butterworth’s effort for Wombleton was well saved by John Towse to make it 3-3, keeper Towse then scored for Royal Oak as did Luke Tateson to make it 4-4 after 5 penalty kicks each, sudden death was the order, Dean Pratt scored for Royal Oak, Tim Sharples took Wombleton’s and it went well over the cross bar for Royal Oak to win 5-4.

Man of the Match winners were James Langthorne in defence (Royal Oak), also in defence Jack Walsh won the Wombleton award.

The teams were as follows, Wombleton: Campbell, Eddery, Ardisonne, Walsh, Sharples, McLaren, Butterworth, Tateson J, Ellis, Tateson L, and Denison. Subs not used Jackson and Turnbull . Royal Oak: Towse, Benson, Pickering, Smith Palmer 82), Adam Cook, Webster, Brown, Linsley (Burdett 77), Pratt, Metcalfe, and Langthorne. Not used Ashley Cooke and Wragg.

Division 1

THE only first division game played on Saturday was at Lealholm who entertained Heslerton with Lealholm making a perfect start scoring three goals in the opening nine minutes and going on to win the game 4-1. Tom While opened the scoring with his first ever goal for the Club after 3 minutes which was an unstoppable 25 yard shot, two minutes later Sam Russell lobbed the visitors keeper Gareth Driver from 18 yards and the third goal arrived in the 9th minute scored by Jaime Nichsol with a superb header following a Russell corner which was flicked on. Shaun Suffield scored for Heslerton in the 10th minute with an excellent goal.

The second half saw Driver make several excellent saves from Sam Bailey twice but in the 78th minute Soni Fergus sent a 20 yard right foot curled effort into the top corner to restore his sides three goal advantage.

Man of the Match winners were Loui Fergus at left back (Lealholm), Curtis Dickinson at centre half won the Heslerton award closely followed by an impressive display by keeper Gareth Driver.

Both the Rosedale v Thornton-le-Dale and Sinnington v Kirkbymoorside Reserves games were postponed.

Division 2

TWO games were played between Sleights and Gillamoor with Sleights winning both games 6-0, the first one saw goals scored by Will Cork-Dove 3, Joe Hugill 2, and Charlie Smith, in the first half Ryan Mintoft and Jamie Preston went close for Gillamoor.

Man of the Match winners were Will Cork-Dove for his hat-trick (Sleights), Ryan Mintoft won the Gillamoor award who also had an impressive display by Shaun Wilson.

The second game saw the Sleights goals scored by Charlie Smith – hat-trick, Joe Hugill 2, and an own goal, Man of the Match winners were Adam Durrant (Gillamoor), and Charlie Smith for his hat-trick (Sleights).

Aislaby United using Ryedale’s pitch entertained Thornton-le-Dale Reserves with the visitors worthy 6-2 winners to remain undefeated sine October 3rd, their goals were scored by Luke Hobbs, Myles Dale, and Kieran Ellis in the opening four minutes, in the second half Ellis completed his first ever hat-trick for the club and Dale scored a second. The Aislaby marksman was Jack Edwards who scored both goals.

Man of the Match winners were Jack Edwards (Aislaby Utd), Kieran Ellis with his hat-trick won the Thornton-le-Dale award.

Match of the Day in the second division was at Snainton against Slingsby, both teams needed victory to maintain their promotion ambitions, Slingsby winning 6-2.

Slingsby were awarded a penalty which was taken by Anthony Taylor and superbly saved by teenage keeper Tom Poor, Snainton scored but somehow the Referee disallowed what appeared to be a good goal, Slingsby took the lead on the half hour when Carl Grey scored with Snainton claiming the goal was well offside, ten minutes later Danny Nunwick scored taking advantage of some poor defending to double his sides lead, Mark Vasey scored for Snainton but on the stroke of half time Slingsby scored a third goal but again there was a strong suspicion of offside claimed Snainton.

Second half goals followed for Slingsby scored by Grey, Taylor after good work by Sam Miller, and Taylor with Vasey scoring a second goal for the home side.

Man of the Match winners were left winger Rafal Jackow (Snainton), Danny Nunwick (Slingsby).

All the league and cup games last Wednesday were postponed owing to the weather.

Ryedale Sports Club

Ryedale Sports Club who quit the league last month owing to a lack of players held a meeting on Sunday to get organised for next season, the following Club Officials were duly elected, Chairman – Rob Wilkinson, Secretary – Harry Reed, and Player/Manager and Treasurer – John Ellis.

Ryedale Hospital Cup final

ON Friday night the League’s second Cup Final, the Ryedale Hospital Cup Final will be played at Pickering Town’s ground, kick off 7.30pm between Kirkbymoorside Reserves and Royal Oak . Malton.
