I WAS interested to read Paul Simpson's letter about footballer George Camsell (HAS April 14).

Camsell made his name in the 1920's and was a great goal scoring centre-forward for Middlesbrough.

I remember older work colleagues, who had seen him play, speaking of how good he was.

There was an occasion in 1959 when my father and I had just paid our money at the turnstile and entered the ground at Ayresome Park when my father spotted this gentlemen.

"There's George Camsell"

said my father, as he pointed him out to me.

I was pleased to have actually seen such a revered sporting figure.

Why are our very own local hero's and their achievements not taught in our schools? Our history lessons bored me to tears talking about items we could not possibly relate to. I would have far rather heard a one hour lesson on George Camsell than a whole term on the Chinese silk traders. I would have been far more engaged.
