SUNDERLAND
IN RESPONSE to GW Dowson's
letter (SHAS, April 21), Roy
Keane has not wasted £50
million on players, he has paid
the going rate for British/Irish
players. It's not the Irishman's
fault that the market is in such
an inflated state.
Hopefully, as Keano has
increased the scouting network,
he may be in a position to go for
some European players in the
summer.
Dowson's dismissive remarks
about SAFC's Academy seem
bizarre when you consider they
were very unlucky to lose out in
the semi final of the prestigious
FA Youth Cup to eventual
winners Manchester City this
season. Kevin Ball and Ged
McNamee are doing a fine job,
have won their league, are in a
play off semi-final and in the
games I have seen played some
impressive attacking football.
Keane is still a rookie
manager and I do not agree
with all of his decisions. For
example, I would have played
Michael Chopra up front
alongside Kenwyne Jones in a 4-
4-2 in the derby against
Newcastle.
Sounds like Dowson has
already made his mind up about
Keane, but I prefer to listen to
the views of Jim Coates and
Davwind from SHAS (April 21)
as they reflect my optimism for
the future of SAFC.
