Henderson is now a Viper
AFTER scouring the globe for
the right man, Mobilx Vipers
head coach Rob Wilson has
moved to sign defenceman Burt
Henderson, as a replacement for
giant Czech Petr Kratky.
Henderson, a native of Vancouver,
will join the Tynesiders
from Japanese side OJI, where he
registered 20 points in 24 games.
"I'm delighted to find a defenceman
of such quality,'' said
Wilson. "He'll bring a lot of experience
to the team and has
been highly recommended by all
the agents and coaches I've spoken
to. The Asian League only allows
three import players per
side, so the quality of guys playing
there is extremely high."
It has been just over a month
since the Vipers released Kratky,
but Wilson has no regrets over
the time it took to sign a replacement.
"I've been on the phone every
day but there was no one available
whom I've wanted,'' he admitted.
"I've had the opportunity
to sign numerous guys but they
weren't the calibre we wanted.''
Henderson will join up with
the Vipers next week after his
work permit application is
processed, so Wilson has registered
himself for this weekend's
home double header against the
Manchester Phoenix and Basingstoke
Bison.
"We only have four defencemen
available,'' said Wilson. "It's
a big weekend for us, so we need
as many players available as possible.
We were hoping to have
Burt cleared in time for the Manchester
game, but unfortunately
his work permit is yet to clear.''
