Vipers outworked as Edinburgh capitalise
Sunday, February 4, 2008, Elite League: Edinburgh 4 -1 Newcastle Vipers
ROB Wilson said his Vipers side were simply outworked when they fell to a 4-1 defeat in Edinburgh on Sunday night.
"Fair play to the Capitals, they took their chances and deserved the win. They outworked us and outplayed us for long periods tonight," said Wilson.
"For whatever reason we couldn't match the Caps for workrate, and that disappoints me. The players, for whatever reason, didn't repeat their efforts of last weekend.
"We had another body in the lineup with Henderson on the blueline, but that shouldn't affect the effort of everyone else.
"There's a full week before the next game, so we'll talk it over in training and make sure that come Saturday we're firing on all cylinders."
Led by hat trick hero Mike Stutzel, Capitals did their chances of a play-off place no harm at all with this solid win over a Vipers side who had won four of their last five going into the match.
It was Vipers who took the lead when Colin Shields shot and scored at 9.57 but the home side came back strongly in the opening period to turn the game in their favour.
A powerplay goal by Stutzel at 16.51 was the followed by a strike by Neil Hay at 18.06 to give Capitals the advantage.
In the middle session, just before the halfway mark, it was 3-1 Capitals as Stutzel scored his second of the night at 28.52 and that was how it was throughout the remainder of the period and well into the final session before Stutzel completed his treble into the empty net with 24 seconds remaining.
