Wednesday, February 16, 2008 Elite League: Belfast Giants 3-1 Mobilx Newcastle Vipers
GIANTS stretched their winning run to 11 games, equaling the best in the league this season, with this victory over a battling Vipers in a game that ended with six fighting majors in the final six minutes.
The home side dominated the opening period and outshot the Vipers by 15 to four, but could find no way through the impressive Ryan MacDonald in the visitors cage.
The second session was very different, but the Giants finally got the scoreboard moving, scoring twice to take control. It was an unassisted shorthanded counter by Mark Dutiaume at 28.20 that made the breakthrough and then on the powerplay Shane Johnson doubled the advantage at 34.29.
Vipers will however probably be very disappointed in the fact that they spurned no fewer than seven powerplay opportunities in the period.
Giants always looked like they had the game in their possession but after a couple of scraps saw Andre Payette and Derek Campbell of Vipers binned for fighting along with Giants' Carlyle Lewis and Trevor Johnson, the visitors scored at 58.42 through Sergiy Rublivsky to set up a tight finish.
After Todd Jackson and Mark Dutiaume were called on fighting majors and with MacDonald pulled for the extra skater Giants managed to survive and added a third goal into the empty net by Peter Campbell with a single second remaining.
