Panthers tear into Vipers

Tuesday, March 5, 2008 Elite League: Nottingham Panthers 6-2 Mobilx Newcastle Vipers

FOUR unanswered Panthers goals in the final period saw Nottingham pull away to beat the Vipers with ease.

Kevin Bergin, who had opened the scoring, completed a great night's work as he hit a brace 24 seconds apart in the 49th minute to complete his hat trick.

Although the Panthers out-shot the Vipers by two to one in the first period, they had to share the spoils on the goal front. They opened the scoring at 9.20 with a goal from Bergin. At 12.17 Ryan Shmyr and Andre Payette were binned for the now-compulsory fighting, and whilst they were in the sin bin the Vipers got back on level term with a goal from Todd Jackson at 14.00.

Panthers went in front for the second time at 26.01 with a goal from Corey Neilson but they allowed the Vipers to get back into it again. With the Panthers on the powerplay, Derek Campbell was on hand to net a shorthanded goal for the Vipers at 29.18. With all to play for in the third period, the teams went in tied at two apiece.

Patrik Wallenberg scored at 44.11 to put the home side in front for a third time, but this time they never looked back. Bergin's 21st and 22nd at 48.24 and 48.51 to completed his hat trick. Shortly after this, Payette made his second visit of the night to the sin bin for fighting - this time he was joined by Panthers' Danny Meyers. Panthers put the icing on the cake as Steve Pelletier completed the scoring at 51.38.
