A win for Players Please
PLAYERS PLEASE (3.10)
possesses the perfect profile to
land Kempton's mile-and-threefurlong
Rosebery Stakes.
Previous course and distance
form is paramount in these
hard-to-crack handicaps and the
fact Players Please has scored
over track and trip speaks
volumes for his chances.
Mark Johnston's colt went
from strength-to-strength in
2007, ending his busy campaign
with an outstanding third at
Ascot off a career-high rating.
It was a stunning run by
Players Please, who was failed
by inches to bank the near 47
grand first prize in a bob of
heads as the three main
protagonists flashed past the
post in unison.
Not a trainer to leave his
horses short of fitness, the
progressive four-year-old is
certain to have been nicely
tuned by Johnston for today's
test in front of the C4 cameras.
The Listed Magnolia Stakes
also carries much kudos and Sir
Michael Stoute has apparently
readied Great Hawk (3.45) to
take the cash.
Stoute's entry warmed up
with a splendid effort in
Lingfield's Group 3 Winter
Derby, grabbing third-place
courtesy of a determined
challenge inside the final
furlong.
Even Sir Michael, with all of
his guile, will most probably
have left a bit to work on with
Great Hawk, who is due to be
partnered by joint champion
jockey, Seb Sanders.
Seb seems sure to make a
brave defence of the title he
shares with Jamie Spencer, and
with enviable tackle such as
Great Hawk to ride, Spencer
needs to pull out all of the stops.
