A Lucky break for the punters
FORMER Royal Ascot winner
I'm So Lucky (4.30) has turned
his attentions to the jumps and
is currently making life hard for
the bookmakers.
I'm So Lucky was with Mark
Johnston on the Flat but has
since switched to David Pipe, for
whom he landed a tidy gamble
when bolting up at Stratford ten
days ago.
Pipe's six-year-old is now bidding
to defy a 7lbs penalty in
Ludlow's Racing Partnership
Handicap Hurdle, a far-from-impossible
ask given his recent superb
form.
The opening Selling Hurdle offers
Ann Duffield's Santera
(2.30) a great opportunity to bag
a first victory, albeit at the lowest
possible level.
Santera was twice a 50-1 rag
when initially trying her luck
over the sticks but shaped more
encouragingly when fourth at
Catterick.
Clearly not totally devoid of
ability, this long-distance raider
is gradually getting the hang of
things and has an excellent
chance in a pretty dire contest.
The Alfa Aggregates Novices'
Chase features three useful
young horses in City Affair,
Pyschomodo and Desert Quest
(3.00).
The ratings suggest City Affair
is least well-in at the
weights, while Psychomodo
might be wanting for confidence
having taken a crashing fall at
Sandown.
By a process of elimination
that leaves Desert Quest, who despite
being an extremely enigmatic
individual, possesses a
smart turn of foot.
Liam Heard's mount bumped
into a decent sort when narrowly
beaten at Huntingdon, a race
he could have won but for hanging
left under pressure.
Any serious money for Tension
Point (5.30) may prove to be
highly significant in the
Millthorpe Novices' Handicap
Hurdle.
The Dai Williams-trained
gelding has not only run creditably
at the course in the past,
he was also given a spin just last
week on the all-weather at
Wolverhampton.
A polytrack pipe-opener is a
sure-fire method of blowing cobwebs
from the lungs, while at the
same time not giving too many
secrets away from a punting perspective.
The longest contest of the day
takes place at Wincanton, where
Petite Margot (3.20) is fancied to
grind out victory in the near
three-and-a-half-mile Somerset
National.
When it comes to consistency,
few mares can hold a candle to
Petite Margot, who has either
won or been placed in 50 per cent
of her previous 33 starts.
Although effective on all surfaces,
the selection is well at
home under the soft conditions
brought about by the deluge
which has hit the west country
of late.
