THE Mongoose can finally end a frustrating run of results by emerging victorious in the Betdaq Multiples Handicap at Kempton.
Montjeu has, of course, sired far sharper arrows than this one, but connections must still be fairly ebullient ahead of this mile-and-aquarter assignment.
The four-year-old has been ticking along quite nicely since leaving Sir Michael Stoute’s yard last autumn, and looked in particularly good health at Wolverhampton a fortnight ago.
Given a patient ride by Luke Morris, The Mongoose ate up considerable ground inside the last of nine and a half furlongs to take third place behind Archie Rice and West End Lad.
David Evans’ new addition has only been sighted seven times, so there is presumably much more remaining in the locker, while a mark of 71 is still on the lenient side for what looks a hum-drum encounter.
Tenbridge should also go well in the skysports.com Handicap.
Trained by Derek Haydn Jones, this three-year-old has troubled the judge on her last four starts, most noticeably finishing a good second over course and distance on her handicap bow.
Although she was well beaten by the winner that day, Pearl Rebel, time should tell that her conqueror was above average.
Tenbridge has gone up 2lb for that brave effort, but she is in great heart and deserves to win a race of this nature.
Roy Brotherton’s Tawseef also showed a hint of progress here over a mile last time, and could be a nice each-way selection for the Kempton For Weddings Handicap.
It would be a shame if he was not good enough to exploit a lowly mark of 49.
Few would begrudge the consistent Matrow’s Lady a return to the winner’s enclosure in the Stokesay Mares’ Handicap Hurdle at Ludlow.
The five-year-old mare, trained by Neil Mulholland, has held her form really well this winter, winning once and occupying the runner-up berth on her two other starts.
It is, however, hardly a shock to see her step back up in trip after she appeared a little tapped for toe when finishing second on heavy ground at Folkestone at the beginning of January.
Before that, she had excelled over two and a half miles when victorious in a tight handicap hurdle at Fontwell.
