Mabs Cross is a filly who I have singled out as possibly being a real star for me this season. We’ll get to see just how good she could be at Newmarket today.

She runs in the Longholes Palace House Stakes, a Group Three race, which looks winnable.

It was won by Marsha last year and I can’t see anything of her standard in the race. Mabs Cross progressed really well last season from maiden company to winning at handicap and then Listed level.

As I said in last week’s column, she really should have won on her seasonal reappearance at Bath a fortnight ago.

We were away slowly, always trying to catch up and didn’t get a clear run. Despite that, she was second by only a neck and showed that she had trained on well.

She’s got a long way to go before being in the class of our stable star and dual Nunthorpe winner, Mecca’s Angel, but she’s come out of the Bath race well, has a nice draw in six and we’re expecting a big run.

Battle Of Marathon will be a big price in the Spring Lodge Stakes. He has a lot to find on the formbook, but I was third on him in the Winter Derby and I always seem to get a good tune out of him.

Gustav Klimt is my idea of the winner of the QIPCO 2,000 Guineas. I was really taken with him when he won at Newmarket last July. He got a run under his belt at Leopardstown this season and looks the one to beat. Headway could run well at a big price. William Haggas’s horses are in great form and I was impressed when he won at Lingfield. Jamie Spencer will really suit him too.

I’m then off to Doncaster, where I will ride Davy's Dilemma, who comes here on a hat-trick after two wins last summer. He’s had a good preparation and we’re expecting a big show in the Napoleons Casino And Restaurant Sheffield Handicap.

Tomorrow all eyes will be at Newmarket for the QIPCO 1,000 Guineas, in which Laurens is my pick.

I was at Newcastle last month when she was working there and she looked very well. She did nothing but improve last season, culminating with victory in the Fillies’ Mile. She looks tough, has that class, and it would be a wonderful story for trainer Karl Burke, owner John Dance and jockey PJ McDonald to see off all the big boys and win here. She looks a great price at 9-1.

I’ll be at Hamilton, where I’ll single out Euro Nightmare in the totesport.com Buttonhook Handicap ' Handicap. She’s run some good races in very competitive handicaps and no doubt she’ll come on well from her seasonal debut at Newcastle.
