The season has already got very busy with the double headers now kicking in, and I’m taking in eight rides across Thirsk and Doncaster today.

The big race at Thirsk is the totepool Thirsk Hunt Cup, which was also the first real big race I won thanks to Blue Spinnaker, who prevailed in 2004.

Thirteen years on and I ride Mutarakez for my first boss, Brian Meehan, whom I joined when I was 16. How fitting would it be if I could win it again. To do so, I’m going to have to be at my best though as we’re drawn 18 of 18.

Mutarakez had some very good winning form in decent handicaps in 2015, but hasn’t won for nearly two years now and will need to reproduce that old form to take a hand, especially with that car park draw.

A horse who I think has a real chance is Olivia Fallow, who lines up in the totepool Racecourse Debit Card Betting Available Fillies' Handicap.

OK, she does have 10st but deserves to be rated that high after running very well last time to finish fourth in a four-way photo.

Carlton Frankie will be the one to beat. He broke the track record at Nottingham last time and should give me a nice lead into the race.

I ride two horses at Doncaster, Get Knotted and Mister Belvedere, who both improved throughout last season and we’re really looking forward to seeing the pair run this year.

Get Knotted, who runs in the Water Aid Handicap, progressed to finish second in both the Ayr Silver Cup and a decent handicap at Doncaster, while Mister Belvedere hasn’t finished out of the frame in his four starts.

He’s by Archipenko, who is doing really well, and this horse has got a lot more to come. He runs in the Stonbury Handicap.

I am at Hamilton tomorrow, where the pick looks to be Merry Banter in the totepool Tangerine Trees Conditions Stakes. She is a very fast filly and the track will really suit her. She will run a big race.

Of course, it’s the QIPCO Guineas Festival at Newmarket this weekend. It’s very difficult to pick holes in Churchill’s form and he’s the most obvious idea of the winner in the 2,000 Guineas.

I think the Greenham winner Barney Roy will run a big race. He hit a flat spot half-way at Newbury and then his stamina kicked in. The extra furlong will suit him.

I also hope he runs well as I was fourth in that race on Kings Gift, and we’re set to head to Deauville for the French 2,000 Guineas in a couple of weeks. He’s come out of the race really well and the extra distance will suit him too.

As for the 1,000 Guineas, I rode Talaayeb to win her one and only start over seven furlongs at Newmarket. She looks a very talented filly and handled the track well that day. She’s a real unknown quantity and looks great each-way value.
