I see I am being quoted at 33-1 for the Stobart Jockeys’ Championship. I think it’s the first time I’ve been on the bookies’ list for the title, so I must be doing alright this season. At the time of writing, I am nine winners off Ryan Moore, who is currently second, and 21 off Silvestre De Sousa.

I am hanging on in there anyway and the odd 33-1 winner comes in doesn’t it!?

What I would say is that my agent Richard Hale has done a fantastic job for me. I have never ridden for so many trainers and the quality is there too – I’ve had two Listed winners and a Group 3 winner the last three weekends.

I’m trying to take any opportunities that come my way with both hands and I was delighted to win the Group 3 Chipchase on Markaz for Owen Burrows and Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum at Newcastle last week.

I’ve had a bit of luck for Sheikh Hamdan and the horse is a full brother to Mecca’s Angel, so that may have had something to do with me getting the ride. He is a lovely big horse and the drop down to six furlongs and the Tapeta surface obviously agreed with him. Hopefully there will be more improvement to come from him.

I’ve got a full day today with nine rides – including six from Mark Johnston’s yard – spread between Haydock and Carlisle.

Glen Moss has a massive chance in the bet365 Conditions Stakes. He was third in the Wokingham at Royal Ascot and the runner-up that day, Brando, is fancied for the Coral Charge at Sandown. All conditions are in his favour and I think he has a massive chance.

The other one I’d pick out from Haydock is Watersmeet who runs in the bet365 Old Newton Cup, a race he was second in last year. He rarely runs a bad race and Mark seems to be having winners on a daily basis.

At Carlisle, Rosamaria can give Geoff Turnbull a belated happy 70th birthday present. I’ve ridden a few horses for Geoff, including Lord Of The Rock, and he is a real gentleman.

His filly carries 8st7lb which means I am on rations of water, eggs and green tea for the next 24 hours. It’s my rock bottom weight and means early to bed on Friday so I am not tempted to start picking!

She drops back to seven furlongs and looks to have a real chance in the Lloyd Ltd Handicap.

Eqleem lines up in the Lloyd Motor Group Handicap and could be another with a great shout. He’s well clear on Racing Post Ratings and hopefully they prove accurate!

I think My Dream Boat looks the value option in the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown. Some might think his win in the Prince of Wales was a fluke, but look at who he beat. Found, The Grey Gatsby, Tryster, A Shin Hikari are all Group One winners, while Western Hymn was third in the Eclipse last year.

The ground will be similar and while The Gurkha has an obvious chance, he looks very tight in the betting.

Easton Angel was being targeted at the Coral Charge, but the ground has gone against her and she will run instead in the John Smith’s City Walls Stakes at York a week today. It will be the first time she runs against older horses, but there’s no point protecting her and her confidence has never been higher.

As for Mecca’s Angel, it was confirmed that she was in season following the King’s Stand Stakes. She is the first horse I see when I drive into Michael Dods’ yard and she seems very bright and well in herself. She'll be back for the Nunthorpe.

Finally, look out for Carry On Camping – Racing UK style. SkyBet’s Michael Shinners and presenter Tom Stanley are camping in Yorkshire ahead of Go Racing in Yorkshire week, and I got roped in to appearing in the TV feature. Trust me – it will be very interesting viewing!

Paul is sponsored by Racing UK, which shows racing from 34 of the UK's leading racecourses - and now in glorious HD. See www.racinguk.com/join for more
