First thing is first and there’s no getting away from just how disappointed we were with Mecca’s Angel’s run in the King’s Stand at Royal Ascot on Tuesday.

We can't put our finger on what happened. Everything was in her favour and she felt great going down to the start, but I knew the game was up after a furlong. It was all too bad to be true.

She’s had lots of tests so we’ll wait and see what the results are before planning her next move. Sometimes fillies can just have an off day, and hopefully it was a one-off.

Let’s not take anything away from the winner Profitable though. I can’t remember seeing a sprinter travel as well off a strong pace like he did. And then when Cotai Glory came to him, he went again.

He’s improved a tremendous amount and if we’d got to within a length, then you’d just say: well that’s how good Mecca’s is.

I was delighted for Profitable’s trainer Clive Cox and jockey Adam Kirby. Clive is a proper gentleman and I was glad to ride a winner for him a week ago and be on his list.

Adam is a fantastic horseman, who had a day he’ll never forget after his partner Megan gave birth to Charlie. It was great to see some emotion from Adam, and I think I’ve set the trend now after my tears following the Nunthorpe! If Adam was 8st 9lb or 10lb, then I am sure he would be champion jockey by now.

Other highlights from Ascot included watching the Wesley Ward-trained Lady Aurelia blitz her rivals in the Queen Mary, Caravaggio looking the real deal in the Coventry and Aidan O’Brien bringing up his 50th Royal winner – an incredible achievement given he’s still a young man.

Willie Twiston-Davies also deserves a mention. He’s a young lad trying to make his way in the game, and his win on Primitivo will do wonders for his confidence and profile.

The big one on the final day is the Diamond Jubilee Stakes, in which I think Mattmu could run a big race at a big price. He was third behind Mecca’s Angel in the Nunthorpe and loves soft ground. If the forecast rain proves right, he’ll be a player for Tim Easterby.

Racing’s full of ups and downs and three days before the King’s Stand, Easton Angel showed she could be a sprinter to be reckoned with after winning the Scurry Stakes at Sandown. She is clearly progressing and came out of the race really well. I think we’re looking at either the Sapphire Stakes in Ireland or the Coral Dash back at Sandown as options.

As for me, I will be at Ayr for a full book of seven rides. My best chance looks to be Marsha in the feature race on the card, the Scottish Sun/British Stallion Studs EBF Land O'Burns Fillies' Stakes.

She is the highest-rated filly in the field and has some Black Type already. I used to ride a lot of horses for Sir Mark Prescott in the north a few years ago but he doesn’t send too many this way nowadays.

Central Square is another who should have a big shout for Roger Varian in the News Scotland Handicap following his second in the Zetland Gold Cup.

Get Knotted is very consistent and has won twice at Ayr before so he’s a solid proposition in the Scottish Sun On Sunday Handicap.
