The King’s Stand and Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot had been mentioned as possible targets for Easton Angel, but in the end Sandown’s BetStars.uk Scurry Stakes was screaming out at us.

It’s a five-furlong Listed race, which is the same class and distance of the race she won at York on her seasonal debut last month.

She has come out of the race really well and hopefully it has marked the start of a successful season.

She is drawn eight of nine so she should not encounter any traffic problems and she thrived at this time last year, when finding only Acapulco too good at Royal Ascot.

We want to gather some real momentum with her and get her confidence soaring. There is no easy Listed race but she was very impressive last time and given she has her eye in now, she will be very hard to beat.

Hopefully it will mark the start of a fruitful few days as Mecca’s Angel is all set for the King’s Stand on Tuesday.

We will be keeping a firm eye on the weather forecast. The going is good at the moment which will be absolutely fine; it’s when the word firm appears in the description that we start to worry.

I sat on her on Wednesday morning and she gave me a great feel. She was second on her comeback run at Haydock last month and despite the defeat, we were far from disappointed.

It was her first run for nine months and the ground really tested her stamina so it was a proper work-out. She kept galloping to the line and wasn’t disgraced being beaten only a neck by Profitable.

That horse is improving and deserves a lot of credit but Profitable was having his second run that day and given Mecca’s will have come on a heap, I’d fancy her to turn the tables.

I am also set to ride Poet’s Society in the Windsor Castle. He showed lots of early speed when being beaten a neck at Musselburgh on Saturday. I think Ascot will really suit his style and he should definitely enter calculations.

Looking back at last weekend, Postponed was amazing in the Investec Coronation Cup. I’d want to be riding him in the Arc, a race where the Derby winner Harzand could end up.

I was pleased for winning jockey Pat Smullen, who is on a par with Ryan Moore in my eyes. He is fast becoming the go-to jockey for the big races, not just in UK and Ireland, but around the world. He lets his riding do the talking and reminds me very much of Mick Kinane.

Talking of Ryan, I couldn’t believe that he was getting stick from some quarters for his ride on US Army Ranger. People forget he was drawn in the car park in 15 of 16 and I felt he gave him a fine ride. It would be great to see the winner and runner-up lock horns at The Curragh.
